There’s no denying it, incredible drool-worthy travel pics and hashtags like #digitalnomad #locationindependent #remotework and #workation have been creeping into our Instagram feed lately. And it got me thinking about becoming a digital nomad and making the world my office.

What better way to find out more about this new phenomenon than to speak to the wonderful Estela Murguia, CEO and Founder of B-Digital Nomad. Since 2015, Estela has been helping people realise their dream of making the world their office. B-Digital Nomad offers 1, 4 or 12-month programs for interesting, like-minded people who are able to work remotely while travelling around the world. Here's what she had to say...

What is a digital nomad?

A digital nomad is essentially someone who has the ability to work from anywhere in the world, all they need is their laptop and wi-fi.

What inspired you to start B-Digital Nomad?

Four years ago, I decided to leave my corporate job and travel the world for two years. It was something that was always on my mind but I had all these excuses that were stopping me until one day I just decided to drop all those excuses and just go for it.

I found my passion in helping people make their dreams of seeing and experiencing the world through working at a travel agency while I was in Malaysia. When I came back to Canada, I worked at a travel agency again but it wasn't the same because I didn't have the face to face interaction with the customers as I did in Malaysia. While I was travelling I got to know many people who wanted to travel long term but it was not possible since they were not working they could not afford to travel long term.

The idea of B-Digital Nomad came to me in December or 2015. All the dots came together while I was stuck at an airport in Mexico on my way to visit my family. Just being in the airport made me realize how much I love to travel and want others to experience it as well. So that's why I put together this program where people can work from anywhere and also travel and see the world. You don't need to be working in an office, the world can be your office.

Why should our students enrol in a remote work adventure with B-Digital Nomad?

The first five countries of our program are predominantly Spanish speaking so what better way to practice the language than to be immersed in countries that speak Spanish. It's also a great way to learn more about the Spanish culture and connect with the locals to improve and feel comfortable speaking the language.

What is your favourite place in Latin America and why?

Medellin, Colombia... because of the nice weather, very affordable cost of living, innovation, friendly locals and great coffee! These are some of the reasons why it's a thriving digital nomad destination.

What are your top three tips for getting the most out of the remote work experience?

1. Balance would have to be number one. The main reason people choose the digital nomad lifestyle is to have the freedom to travel and work from anywhere so there needs to be a balance between working and exploring.

2. The second would be to set up a structure or routine. It can be tough to get work done when your environment is constantly changing but if you have a consistent routine, that can help immensely.

3. And lastly, enjoy and have fun! There's so much to see and do in the world so take advantage of it while you can.

What excites you about the 2017 B-Digital Nomad program?

Being able to travel the world with a community of digital nomads and learn about the different cultures and connect with the locals. There are so many possibilities that can come about... like business partnerships, project collaborations, life long friendships, learning new things, and making a difference in the local communities.
