Mexico Musts: Isla Mujeres in 2 days
Writing this blog I'm dreaming of thirst-quenching sunset margaritas and crystal clear cenotes. Take us back to Mexico pronto!
If you've never been, do yourself a favour and book a flight ASAP.
And be sure to check out one of our Caribbean faves, Isla Mujeres.
Here are some tips for how to make the most of this island haven in two days.
Day 1.
Start the day with a healthy, delicious breakfast (or brunch) at Aroma Isla. Their falafel pita with hummus is to die for, as are their juices. Then make a reservation for tomorrow's dinner at Olivia (you'll thank us later).
After breakfast/brunch, hire a golf cart for a half day and head south to the Turtle Farm (tortugranja), which supports turtle conservation on the island, Next head to Punta Sur to check out the beautiful southern vistas. After a few selfies, pull up your golf cart at The Joint Reggae Bar and Grill for a relaxed lunch or a cold beverage. Then head north (down the other side of the island), taking in the incredible views, to Playa Norte for a swim and a drink at one of the quaint beachside bars.
Once you've had enough, return your golf buggy and head to Rolandi's Pizzeria for an Italian dinner feast. Take a table on the street and soak up the Isla atmosphere before gouging yourself silly on the pizza or the veal and rosemary ravioli.
Day 2.
On your way to breakfast (do yourself a favour and visit Aroma Isla again), take a stroll down the malecon on the western side of the island. Don't forget to grab a photo with the Isla Mujeres sign - you're not a true tourist if you don't. As you meander back to the main street for some shopping, notice the incredible street art. Pick up some brightly coloured textiles or ceramics this morning, but don't forget to haggle.
Today relax with some more beach time at Playa Norte or on the western side of the island at Playa Sol. Be sure to check out a sunset over the mainland. Even better if you have a margarita in hand.
Don't forget tonight you have a reservation at Olivia's. This Mediterranean restaurant is a must. The spanakopita and chicken with olives should be top of your list. Be sure to make a reservation for Olivia, via phone or the website. They offer two sittings at 6.30pm and 8.30pm. I hope you requested a table in the magical candlelit garden (hot tip).
If you’re after a post dinner drink (of course you are, you're in Mexico after all), head to El Patio and take a seat upstairs under the stars. The live music will get you in the mood, and if you’d like to kick on, the party is at Poc-Na (the hostel) from about 11pm. You’ll find it on the beach, filled with tourists from around the world. Try out the slack-line if you dare!
Follow this whirlwind itinerary and we know you'll be leaving Isla with fond memories and a promise to return.
And of course, to get the most out of your trip, we encourage taking some Spanish lessons (with us of course)before you head off!
